The Global Cellulose Fibers Business is seeking an experienced laboratory technician to support new product development efforts at our Innovation Center in Federal Way, WA. Primary responsibilities of this hands on role include laboratory scale manipulation and testing of cellulose fiber and fiber based materials in chemical and physical properties disciplines, including operation and maintenance of a broad range of laboratory equipment.

The incumbent will be working under the general guidance of the unit manager and project scientists and is anticipated to perform independently as a lead technician in multiple laboratory areas. This position reports into the Product Development organization.

Key Functions:

  • Conduct hazard assessments and develop job safety analyses for all work performed.

  • Perform physical and chemical manipulation and testing of cellulose fibers and related materials.

  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment.

  • Accurately and quickly perform testing following pre-established protocols.

  • Develop and document standard operating procedures where needed.

  • Develop/validate new chemical and physical test methods for cellulose and related materials.

  • Maintain quality control charts and ensure test results meet quality objectives.

  • Coordinate and schedule purchasing of laboratory consumables.

  • Coordinate and assist in scheduling maintenance and repairs with vendors and maintenance staff.

  • Accurately summarize laboratory results.

  • Travel as needed to manufacturing or customer sites to participate in trials and support scale-up and manufacturing process development efforts.

  • Work productively and collaboratively in cross-functional teams to achieve project development objectives.

Qualifications:

  • Two or four-year technical degree or equivalent work experience in a technology organization role.

  • Proven safety leader with experience working safely in an industrial R&D or manufacturing environment. Dedicated to maintaining an injury free workplace.

  • 4+ Years experience in an industrial R&D or manufacturing environment related to the forest products industry.

  • 4+ Years experience and demonstrated performance as lead or project technician in a laboratory linked to innovation or product support in the forest products industry.

  • Demonstrated experience operating laboratory equipment for testing of cellulosic materials including pulp, paper and hand sheets. Broad range of experiences preferred.

  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively within diverse multidisciplinary project teams.

  • Demonstrated ability to provide accurate and timely documentation of experimental results.

  • Ability to accurately record and summarize technical data using MS Office software and electronic laboratory notebook.

  • Excellent planning and time management skills. Highly organized and self-directed.

  • Inventive and easily adaptable to changing priorities and business needs.

  • Be able to lift 2-20 pounds regularly, climb steps and ladders, and stand or work up to 3 hours at a time for 10-13 hours when necessary.

  • Successfully complete a pre-employment drug screen, background check, and physical.

  • Be eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship.
