Forest Stewardship Coordinator Position

This is a sustainability position reporting to the Senior Manager, Natural Capital Stewardship. The primary focus will be on forest stewardship across the value chain of a global paper and packaging company. Knowledge and experience with global forestry issues, including fiber supply and certification, are necessary. In addition, a broad understanding of sustainability concepts and principles as they apply to large-scale manufacturing is desired. The successful candidate will work across the corporation with other business and functional leaders to drive sustainable forestry, fiber certification, and broader sustainability initiatives. The candidate will also have extensive interaction with external stakeholder groups and serve as a project manager and ambassador on behalf of International Paper.

Responsible for supporting management of International Paper’s U.S fiber procurement and Chain of Custody (CoC) certification programs, supporting IP businesses with internal and customer facing elements of certification in the IP product value chain, engaging with key stakeholders and strategic partners to develop and support ongoing forest stewardship projects, and providing training and education on the IP Way Forward Sustaining Forests strategic driver.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Manage Sustaining Forests initiatives with strategic partners, including project implementation, timely follow up and reporting, budget tracking, and communication aspects. Ensure project alignment with IP Way Forward strategic drivers and corporate sustainability goals.

  • Support maintenance of current certifications. Scope of work includes SFI, FSC, PEFC Chain of Custody, FSC Controlled Wood, and multi-site certifications.

  • Map customer demand for certified products, fiber traceability requirements, and any new corporate policies

  • Answer customer surveys and requests for sustainability info

  • Update internal training platform for certification

  • Provide account managers and business representatives training on certification and forestry sourcing

  • Represent the company in external events, conferences, partnership development, and industry meetings.

  • Support effective internal and external communication of company initiatives within Sustaining Forests, including outreach media and forestry specific collateral.

  • Work across IP businesses and staff groups as a subject matter expert on forest stewardship and advance Sustaining Forests as a key component of how we operate everyday.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain expertise in applicable certification programs, policies and protocols regarding forest management, fiber procurement, and CoC (Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI), Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), American Tree Farm System (ATFS).

  • Serve as a subject matter expert on forestry and fiber certification issues related to sustainability goals and objectives

  • Support relationships with key internal and external stakeholders on issues related to sustainability and forest stewardship and provide support to customers on behalf of business leaders

  • Work with the sales and marketing groups to build customer relationships and respond to customer needs on certification claims and labeling product

  • Work with various IP Business units, Communications, Government Relations and Investor Relations to address inquiries from diverse groups of stakeholders

  • Provide internal and external training on issues related to forest stewardship and fiber certification

  • Advocate on behalf of the company with environmental groups, associations, governmental employees, customers, and certification bodies

  • Support development of strategic initiatives on signature Planet causes and act as project manager and primary liaison with strategic partners

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Master’s Degree in Forest Products, Forestry, Natural Resource Management or related field preferred

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience working in a sustainability context in a forest products or related corporate or non-profit sector

  • Knowledge of forestry certification programs (SFI, FSC, PEFC) required

  • Knowledge of global forestry and natural resource sustainability issues

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and work with diverse stakeholders (e.g., corporate leadership, local/state political leaders, special interest groups)

  • Demonstrated ability to work across complex organizations

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and manage large-scale multi-stakeholder projects from vision to implementation

  • Demonstrated ability to lead change

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Strong customer service skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

  • The position will be based in Memphis, TN and 20% travel is expected
