The overall function of the Mechanic requires knowledge of electrical,
mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic areas to assure that all equipment and
machinery is operational and kept running, at the mechanic C, B, A, and
master mechanic levels. Areas of assignment include the corrugator,
finish, and shipping departments.
It is essential to respond to breakdowns as reported by department
supervisors, and it is essential to prioritize these assignments.
Essential to complete repairs onsite and in the shop, troubleshooting,
diagnosing problems, replacing or repairing parts. Essential to make
machine improvements, modifications, adjustments. Essential to use
electric diagnostic equipment, a variety of hand and power tools. It is
essential to change out, repair or replace belts, hoses, pumps,
bearings, other machine parts. It may be essential to operate lathes,
milling machines in the shop. It is essential to perform welding
activities including MIG and stick welding. Essential to use cutting
torches, plasma cutters. Essential to perform minor fabrications such as
machine guards, and fabrication activities may be more extensive
depending on proficiency levels. Essential to read blueprints and
schematics, technical repair and manufacturers’ manuals. Essential to
respond to specific areas of the plant as per the supervisor, and rotate
to other areas, including corrugator, finishing machines, water
treatment, power boiler and shop. Essential to perform preventative
maintenance activities, responding to work orders regarding lubrication
of machinery and equipment, using hand and pneumatic oilers, hand grease
guns. Essential to complete machine modifications and upgrades.
Essential to complete minor building maintenance including the office
area. Essential to research computer database to ascertain part
availability, obtain parts, providing notification to the parts clerk
regarding inventory deduction. It may be essential to request parts
from the parts clerk. Essential to work at a variety of heights.
Essential to operate forklifts, manlifts. Essential to use step and
extension ladders. Essential to communicate with maintenance supervisor,
parts clerk, department supervisors, machine operators, other mechanics
at the shift change during the 30-min. shift overlap to discuss
potential and existing problems, projects. In water treatment, it is
essential to treat up to 5000 gallons of wastewater at a time, adding
acid, checking pH, adding caustic, changing acid and caustic totes.
Essential to adjust acidic and basic level to alter the pH in the boiler
area. Essential to perform cleanup activities including sweeping,
keeping work area clean.
