The International Paper Global Cellulose Fibers (GCF) Business is seeking a technology platform leader to spearhead the development and commercialization of differentiated cellulose fiber products for absorbent and hygiene market segments. This position offers the opportunity to combine world-class skills in absorbency science, comprehensive knowledge of hygiene product design/markets and well established project management skills to accelerate GCF new product development (NPD) initiatives. This role is located at IP’s Global Innovation Center in Federal Way, WA where our goal is to bring two to three new products annually to commercial-readiness for the GCF Business.
This position reports into the New Product Development department.
Provide technology platform and project/program leadership to develop and commercialize differentiated cellulose fiber products tailored to the needs of absorbent, hygiene and personal care product market segments.
Lead and contribute to scientific/technology development efforts resulting in successful differentiated cellulose-based product offerings for targeted markets.
Lead NPD “core teams” consisting of scientists, engineers, technicians and related development resources.
Proactively lead safety aspects of all project work; ensures that worker and workplace safety is the highest priority.
Leverage existing enterprise intellectual property (patents and trade secrets) and lead the development of additional intellectual property to establish strong, advantaged product positions within targeted absorbent & hygiene markets.
Prepare briefing materials for leadership and develop data-driven recommendations for project direction and next steps. Regularly communicate project status and project/resource needs to all stakeholders.
Use GCF’s phase & gate methodology to plan and execute NPD initiatives; including establishing and tracking project schedules, budgets and spending.
Collaborate with GCF business colleagues including Sales, Marketing, Finance, Manufacturing, Technical Support and Supply Chain resources in ensuring fit with business strategy and developing strong value propositions for new product offerings into targeted markets.
Partner with internal environmental, health, safety, regulatory and product stewardship resources to ensure new product offerings meet regulatory requirements and are in accord with Company values and product stewardship policies.
Provide input to capital appropriation and project development processes to make the business case for capital investment(s) needed to establish manufacturing capability for these products. Provide input and guidance to capital projects through start-up and commercial ramp-up as needed.
Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience
Proven capability to work safely in an industrial R&D or manufacturing environment. Highly focused on personal and team safety; proactive in ensuring that all work is conducted in a safe manner.
PhD or MS degree (or equivalent experience) in engineering or science with in-depth knowledge of absorbency science and its application to cellulose-based materials. The successful candidate will have ten or more years of experience in varying functional roles in the hygiene/personal care products industry.
Ability to lead and contribute to technology development efforts resulting in successful differentiated cellulose-based product offerings for targeted markets.
Highly knowledgeable in developing and protecting trade secrets and patents for a new product platform.
A minimum of three years of experience in the development of new products or new materials.
Contributes innovative thinking and creativity to problem solving; recognizes opportunities beyond scope of original problem.
Converts technical solutions into business solutions and ensures that business implementation of technology has a sound scientific and financial basis .
Track record of making sustained contributions that add significant value to the company, e.g., commercialized products, technology developments, research findings and/or inventions.
Strong project management skills; leads projects of high value, complexity and risk and functions as a facilitator, consultant and researcher. Highly skilled in leading cross-functional teams.
Can communicate and collaborate effectively within immediate team, across the department, and with: operations clients, business clients, R&D, businesses, senior management, suppliers and customers.
Can travel to customer, supplier and partner locations to establish relationships and provide support as needed to accomplish project objectives.
Knowledge of pulp & paper products, manufacturing processes, technologies, raw materials, markets and industry participant is a plus.
