Job Title: Accountant Fixed Assets
This position is part of the Global Financial Services-Enterprise organization. We are responsible for capital and fixed asset accounting for IP’s North American facilities which include pulp and paper mills, converting plants, and foodservice facilities. Responsibilities include monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting for capital and fixed assets to meet required controls, ensuring accurate compliance and records. Some travel is required. This is a centralized process and the candidate will be responsible to implement process improvements as needed. The following are key accountabilities:
Be a valuable partner to Controllers of assigned facilities as an extension of the finance team to be responsible for all capital and fixed asset processes and G/L accounts.
Lead monthly capital project status review meetings with Engineering Managers and Project Engineers to discuss current and future projects, retirements, and project closings.
Is a reliable partner with the Engineering team at facilities to perform requests related to capital projects, capital service accruals, engineering hours, ad hoc reporting, and assistance.
Review capital projects to ensure correct set up in SAP project systems, identify P&L impacts due to any related retirements, and assist with forecasting for Controller. Monitor projects from development thru completion.
Ensure that all asset management transactions are properly accounted for and PP&E related accounts are reconciled in a timely manner.
Ensure adherence to corporate policies/GAAP in accounting for capital and fixed assets.
Ensure that proper internal controls are in place to facilitate accurate and timely financial reporting.
Calculate and post required general ledger entries.
Lead Annual Physical Asset Inventories with travel to the facilities to insure proper verification of fixed assets. This annual review also uses this face to face interaction to build strong relationships and effectively collaborate with Controllers, Engineering Managers and Finance personnel to discover best practices and discuss, implement or train on improved processes.
Ensure centralized processes are continuously optimized for efficiency and effectiveness and adapted for new business dynamics.
Calculate and review annual accretion schedules for Landfill ARO, which includes preparation of quarterly ARO Roll forward.
Ensure that all Asset Hotline Calls are answered and recorded in a timely manner
Assist Fixed Asset Tax with Quarterly and Annual Reporting to include capital project Tax forecasts, proper asset classifications and coding per tax laws.
Competencies / Experience:
Education: Bachelor’s in Accounting, Business or Finance
3 -5 years experience
Knowledge of key internal controls as they relate to Fixed Assets.
Functional understanding of SAP.
Financial accounting experience.
Basic understanding of pulp and paper mill operations preferred.
