International Paper Sustainability Engagement Coordinator in MEMPHIS, Tennessee

This position reports to the Senior Manager, Natural Capital Stewardship. The primary focus will be on sustainability stewardship across the value chain of a global packaging, pulp and paper company. Knowledge and experience with global natural resource use in a manufacturing context and stakeholder engagement are necessary. A broad understanding of sustainability concepts and principles as they relate to large-scale manufacturing is desired. The successful candidate will work across the corporation with other business and functional leaders to drive sustainability throughout IP’s value chain. The candidate will also have extensive interaction with external stakeholder groups and serve as a project manager and ambassador on behalf of International Paper.

Responsible for supporting IP businesses and facilities with internal and customer facing elements of environmental and social sustainability throughout the IP product value chain, engaging with key internal and external stakeholders and strategic partners to develop and support ongoing natural capital stewardship projects, and providing training and education on the IP Way Forward strategic drivers.

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Degree in Engineering, Paper Science, Forest Products, Natural Resource Management or related field required

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience working in a forest products manufacturing or corporate context

  • Knowledge of global environmental sustainability issues

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and work with diverse stakeholders (e.g., corporate leadership, local/state political leaders, special interest groups)

  • Demonstrated ability to work across complex organizations

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and manage large-scale multi-stakeholder projects from vision to implementation

  • Demonstrated ability to lead change

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • Strong customer service skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

  • The position will be based in Memphis, TN and 20% travel is expected

The requirements/responsibilities of this position include:

  • Serve as a subject matter expert on issues related to IP sustainability goals and objectives and work with cross-cutting teams to support development of IP’s next sustainability goals

  • Serve as IP liaison and technical resource with key internal and external stakeholders on issues related to sustainability and Planet stewardship

  • Engage with IP businesses, sales and marketing groups to build customer relationships and support customer inquiries related to sustainability

  • Provide technical support to various IP Business units, Communications, Government Relations and Investor Relations to address needs from diverse groups of stakeholders

  • Provide internal and external training on issues related to IP’s value chain and natural capital stewardship

  • Advance IP’s Global Citizenship principles on behalf of the company with environmental groups, associations, governmental employees, customers, and certification bodies

  • Support development of globally strategic initiatives on signature Planet causes and act as project manager and primary liaison with strategic partners

Key external stakeholders include:

IP Customers and strategic partners including ENGO’s, non-profit organizations, industry associations and other special interest groups.

Key internal customers include:

Corporate and business staff (NAP, GCF, IPG, NAC), Global Citizenship and Global Sourcing – position interacts with peers, upper level managers from all businesses, and IP facility employees.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Manage Planet initiatives with strategic partners, including project implementation, timely follow up and reporting, budget tracking, and communication aspects. Ensure project alignment with IP Way Forward strategic drivers and corporate sustainability goals.

  • Support development of IP’s next generation of sustainability goals

  • Support development of employee engagement strategies for sustainability

  • Answer customer surveys and requests for sustainability info

  • Update and deploy internal training for Sustaining Forests and other sustainability issues as needed

  • Represent the company in external events, conferences, partnership development, and industry meetings.

  • Support effective internal and external communication of company initiatives within Global Citizenship, including outreach media

  • Work across IP businesses and staff groups as a subject matter expert on sustainability and advance principles of People and Planet as key components of how we operate every day.
