The Oracle Database Team Lead is accountable and responsible for database hosting and support functions to sustain a dynamic, large scale, integrated, multi-tiered Oracle & MySQL database environment consisting of a variety of applications (e.g. Security, Audit, Business, Enterprise-wide [Omega, Unifier, etc.], Mill-related, Custom developed, and/or Purchased). This position reports to the Manager, Server Application Hosting & Support, and is responsible for all aspects associated with leading a technical team of skilled individuals.


  • Direct and execute the appropriate processes to ensure the day-to-day operation of the Oracle and MySQL database environments

  • Deliver a stable, available, secure, controlled (SOX), sustainable, and recoverable Oracle and MySQL database environment for International Paper

  • Achieve a high level of customer satisfaction and appropriate level of availability through execution of proactive and reactive monitoring, alerting systems that are maintained for each system

  • Create best practices that optimize internal workflows and standardize processes. ◦Maintain effective monitoring and system health for each application area that enables management, service providers, and clients to readily understand process performance and quality of service

  • Research tools and processes to identify usage and capacity issues as they develop

  • Present research and assist in developing long-range plans to address problems and increase efficiency.

  • Support internal and external audits and any associated remediation

  • Develop goals and strategies for Oracle/MySQL database hosting

  • Define and communicate clear objectives within the team annually that are in alignment with properly maintaining the database environments

  • System maintenance through upgrades, patches, support packs, etc. for all tools used within the database environment

  • User-based RFS and problem tickets

  • Maintaining system management, monitoring, notification, configuration, and security

  • Design, develop, configure, customize, integrate, implement, train, and support all aspects of Oracle/MySQL Database Hosting functionality.

  • Manage system support activities to meet agreed service levels and customer expectations in a timely and cost effective manner while ensuring that all governance processes are followed

  • Work with key stakeholders on the implementation of operational processes

  • Develop training plans for the team that both develop personnel and ensure we have trained personnel for all aspects of our environment

  • Bachelor in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent.

  • Typically has a minimum of 8-10 years IT work experience

  • IT leadership experience preferred

  • Oracle/MySQL database experience preferred

  • Manage, navigate, and influence the governance processes to ensure a stable environment

  • Manage a complex, multi-tiered environment that is a foundation for critical business processes at International Paper

  • Provide leadership within Technical Services to ensure the internal service providers are at the required availability levels to meet the service levels expected by the business units and agreed upon by Technical Services

  • Communicate appropriately and effectively with multiple levels of management

  • Provide balanced and effective support all users of the applications hosted

  • The work itself, e.g., problems, opportunities, change: ◦Maintain availability of supported databases

  • Maintain balance between business requests and sound technical and financial solutions

  • Support project go-live initiatives and anticipated growth of applications

  • Motivate staff to provide excellent customer service on a 7x24x365 basis

  • Retain highly skilled team members

  • Be willing to put in off-hours work for high priority efforts and issues.


  • Direct supervision of six skilled technical staff members, two indirect reports globally

  • Contribute input to, and monitor expenditures for, budget of approximately $1-$2MM

  • The applications supported by this function require 24x7 availability and support for International Paper’s businesses not only in the US, but Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America as well.

  • Design and roadmap the landscapes for the supported applications.

  • Weekend work is required for this position at times
